What should you know before buying a yo-yo?
Responsive vs. Unresponsive
- A responsive yo-yo returns to your hand with just a light tug on the string. An unresponsive yo-yo needs a special return trick called a “bind”. It takes a bit more practice, but in return you get much longer spin time.
- The main difference between the two types is the bearing:
- Narrow bearing (responsive): The string grips easily and winds up on its own.
- Wide bearing (unresponsive): Gives more room and prevents unexpected returns during complex tricks.
- Many models can be both responsive and unresponsive, so they often come with both types of bearings, letting you switch as your skills grow.
Material
- Plastic (ABS): Survives drops and is safer on impact (especially for beginners). Ideal for a first yo-yo.
- Metal (Aluminium 6061 / 7075): Heavier, super stable and with much longer spin. Suited to fast and complex combos. They look and feel premium, which is why many people start here directly.
- Bi-metal: An aluminium body with steel rings on the outer rim. This moves the weight to the edges for maximum spin, power and stability: the choice of professionals for competitions.

- Strings wear out: Over time they fray and wear thin, so a spare pack is always a good idea.
- Ready to start: So you don't have to wonder what you need at the start, every yo-yo we sell comes with 5 spare strings and, where the model allows it, two types of bearings (responsive for beginners and unresponsive for harder tricks).
- Keep it like new: Metal and plastic scratch easily when carried in a backpack or a pocket with keys, so a soft case is a great addition.
- Maintenance: At the start you don't need anything special! Just change the string when it frays. The bearings come ready to play and don't need lubricating (the wrong lube can even damage them).
